The Master of Studies is a degree within the Graduate Studies Select (GSS) program. The GSS program, is a flexible option for graduate studies at ANU. It provides for an individualised program of study that cannot be met through a single academic discipline or following a prescribed sequence of study.

Subject to meeting course entry requirements, students can select courses from across all the graduate course offerings at ANU. This opportunity increases the flexibility and choice available.

Graduate Studies Select allows students to structure studies and direct learning in a way which meets academic, personal and professional interests. It enables students to develop skills and expertise in a range of learning areas. For example, construct a program of study in cognate courses to meet admission criteria for another degree; or select courses to reflect your own interests. For example, students can select courses in public policy and economics to meet workplace requirements; undertake studies in art history, museums and collections, business and management to prepare for a new career; explore climate issues though environment sciences, history, law, and science communication; gain further knowledge through courses in development combined with an Asian language and translation studies; or develop a new specialisation in strategic studies with a focus in the Middle East region.
