The course will investigate how word structure is organised in languages, and the major methodological approaches that have been used to study it.  In  addition to examining the major concepts in modern morphological theory, it will also consider in detail the morphology of a small number of languages of different types.

  1. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the morphological structures of human languages.
  2. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of how people use morphological systems in languages to communicate.
  3. Use appropriate terminology to describe morphological systems in a range of language types.
  4. Evaluate the suitability of different morphological frameworks for the morphological phenomena of diverse languages.
  5. Carry out original research applying morphological theory/theories to one or more languages.

3 written analyses, 1-2 pages of data calling for 2-4 pages of analysis (10% each, totaling 30%) [LOs 1,2,3]

Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 36 hours of contact: 24 hours of lectures, 12 hours of tutorial.
b) 94 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have successfully completed LING6003. Alternatively you may gain permission of the Course Convener to enrol in this course. Incompatible with LING2007, LING3107 and LING6007.
