This course will offer students an overview of some moments of critical change in the recorded history of music. These turning points will be examined in terms of their historical, cultural and musical significance, and in terms of the resulting changes in musical language. The course will continue to develop students’ skills in researching and communicating about musical issues.

  1. Critique historical developments in music since 900 AD through the examination and discussion of significant changes in the historical, social, and aesthetic contexts of music and its languages
  2. Demonstrate listening skills through the study and discussion of selected works
  3. Undertake research and analysis of musical topics
  4. Communicate about music using written, visual, oral and multimedia forms

Indicative Assessment

  1. Tutorial presentation 20% (10 minute presentation at 10%; written version submitted approx. 800 words 10%) [learning outcomes 1-4],
  2. Essay Plan 15% [learning outcomes 1,3 and 4],
  3. Listening Test 25% [learning outcomes 1 and 2],
  4. 2500 words Essay 40% [learning outcomes 1, 3 amd 4]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from: a) 36 hours of contact over 12 weeks: 24 hours of lectures and 12 hours of tutorials; and b) 94 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.
