The Spanish minor provides students with the skills needed to develop an ability to understand, speak, read and write Spanish. Students are exposed to Spanish as used across the Spanish-speaking world, and a wide variety of sources (including newspapers, magazines, media, cinema, songs and literature) are drawn on. In this way, culture, history, politics and society in the Spanish-speaking world are incorporated into the classes to enhance the language-learning experience. Students also have the opportunity to deepen their understanding and strengthen their language skills through specialist courses in Hispanic Linguistics. Students with existing knowledge of Spanish can begin at a more advanced level, and the exact sequence of courses depends on the level at which the student begins the minor.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. communicate in Spanish in a range of contexts
  2. demonstrate a basic understanding of the structure and uses of Spanish
  3. demonstrate a basic understanding of the cultural and linguistics aspects of Spanish language and societies and their socio-historical context
  4. construct a schema of the connections between the Spanish language and its geographical, social and cultural origins
  5. recognise the importance of intercultural communication.
