This independent research project allows students to apply the conceptual and methodological skills they have developed in the area of cultural and environmental heritage to a particular research question or case study linked to their academic or professional interests.

Where the project involves travel outside of Canberra (including to other parts of the ACT), students will only be permitted to travel upon completion of ANU required documentation and the approval of all documentation by the relevant delegate.

  1. Independently identify and construct a coherent research question;
  2. Synthesise and articulate key concepts in the various disciplines that contribute to the field of heritage studies;
  3. Apply methodological, conceptual and analytic tools to advanced level research into heritage studies;
  4. Write a research project that applies conceptual and methodological skills to address a particular research question or case study; and
  5. Model best practice and have a commitment to ethical, reflective practice in heritage studies.

This course is available both as a face-to-face course for students based in Canberra and also as a distance (fully online) course for external students. The online course materials will be available through http://wattlecourses.anu.edu.au/

Indicative Assessment

Research essay, 6000 words (100%) [Learning Outcomes 1-5]

The nature of the inquiry will be established at the commencement of the teaching period through a written proposal that will be developed in consultation between the student and supervising lecturer. This proposal is not summatively assessed (it has zero percent weighting) but is a compulsory hurdle requirement for completion of the course.
 

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 12 hours of contact with the supervising lecturer over 12 weeks; and
b) 118 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be enrolled in the Masters of Museum and Heritage Studies MMUHS or VMUHS and completed 24 units of courses or be enrolled in an MPhil or PhD program. You will need to contact the School to request permission code to enrol.
