This course focuses on empirical estimation of individual- and household-level welfare indicators and microeconomic models related to these indicators. The course involves a series of lectures on key international development indicators used by researchers in development microeconomics. The course also introduces and discusses empirical studies on microeconomic development issues taken from high-quality research around the world. The policy implications of empirical findings will receive particular emphasis. Students will also carry out econometric analysis of microeconomic issues in development. The topics covered will include poverty, gender, health, education, and inequality.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Demonstrate a sound understanding of key indicators used by researchers in development microeconomics.
  2. Understand the microeconomic foundations of key development problems.
  3. Use microeconomic concepts and tools to critically analyse development policies.
  4. Apply these techniques to constructively analyse and design policy interventions.
  5. Evaluate and carry out high-quality research in development microeconomics.

Assumed Knowledge

Skills in econometrics and microeconomics are assumed. Familiarity with Stata, R, or another econometrics package will be advantageous.
