How does Australia engage with the world? This course provides students with a comprehensive overview of the main concepts, issues, themes and debates in Australian foreign policy. It covers Australia’s most important relationships, participation in a range of global and regional institutions, and engagement with the Asia-Pacific region. It offers both an historical perspective on the evolution of Australian foreign policy approaches, and a set of concepts and paradigms for better understanding the central drivers of Australian foreign policies and policy debates today.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Detect and trace over time enduring themes that have influenced Australia’s global engagement
  2. Understand the nature of the challenges Australia is facing in responding to the shifting global order
  3. Navigate conceptual debates and gain theoretical insights into processes and outcomes in Australian foreign policy

  4. Develop their own views as to the impact of global change on the direction of Australia foreign policy
  5. Communicate their views about the choices Australia should make in response to these changes in a range of formats and settings

The course is conducted through seminars with an emphasis on interactive teaching aimed at engaging all students in active participation.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

This course comprises some 130 hours of activity over 12 weeks, both interactive/seminar based and independent research. The course comprises a maximum of 6k words of assessment or the equivalent. Please note this is a general guide, averaged over the semester and the final hours ultimately depend on the individual's ability in reading and writing.
