Program Requirements
The Graduate Certificate of Science requires the completion of 24 units, which must consist of:
24 units from completion of 6000-level and 8000-level courses in any of the following subject areas:
ASTR Astronomy and Astrophysics
BIOL Biology
CHMD Culture, Health and Medicine
EMSC Earth and Marine Science
ENVS Environmental Science
MATH Mathematics
MEDN Medical Science
NEUR Neuroscience
PHYS Physics
POPH Population Health
POPM Population Mental Health Research
SCNC Science
SCOM Science Communication
VCPG Vice-Chancellor Postgraduate
Admission Requirements
At a minimum, all applicants must meet program-specific academic/non-academic requirements, and English language requirements. Admission to most ANU programs is on a competitive basis. Therefore, meeting all admission requirements does not automatically guarantee entry.
- Bachelor degree or international equivalent with GPA 4/7; or
- Graduate Diploma or international equivalent with a GPA 4/7; or
- Graduate Certificate or international equivalent with a GPA 4/7; or
- 24 units of courses in a postgraduate program with a GPA of 4/7; or
- Graduate Records Examination (GRE) General test, completed no more than 5 years before the time of application, with a minimum score of 155 for Verbal Reasoning, 155 for Quantitative Reasoning and 4.0 in Analytical Writing and a minimum of 3 years full-time equivalent work experience at ANZSCO Skill Level 1 in a field related to the program; or
- A minimum 5 years full-time equivalent work experience at ANZSCO Skill Level 1 in a field related to the program.
All applicants must meet the University’s English Language Admission Requirements for Students
This program is available for admission for domestic students only. It can be used as an exit pathway by domestic and international students.

This program is only open to domestic students.
Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) are available for this program.
Indicative CSP fees $3,976
Students unsuccessful in securing a CSP can study as a DTF student.
Domestic Tuition Fees (DTF) $16,760
Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) for this program are limited, competitive and awarded on academic merit. There is no application process for a CSP. All students commencing in Semester 2 2021 (including Winter and Spring sessions) will be ranked according to the GPA of the qualification used as the basis of admission.

Fee Information
All students are required to pay the Services and amenities fee (SA Fee)
The annual indicative fee provides an estimate of the program tuition fees for international students and domestic students (where applicable). The annual indicative fee for a program is based on the standard full-time enrolment load of 48 units per year (unless the program duration is less than 48 units). Fees for courses vary by discipline meaning that the fees for a program can vary depending on the courses selected. Course fees are reviewed on an annual basis and typically will increase from year to year. The tuition fees payable are dependent on the year of commencement and the courses selected and are subject to increase during the period of study.

This program provides opportunities for students wishing to continue their studies in a science based discipline. The program can also provide an entry pathway to other postgraduate coursework programs, such as Master degrees. This program is suitable of students who have completed tertiary studies in a discipline relevant to science.
This program can also be used as an exit award for students who are unable, for a variety of reasons, to complete a Master degree but have completed 24 units of credit toward their postgraduate program.
NOTE: Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) are available for this program.
Domestic applicants offered a place to study in this Graduate Certificate commencing their studies in 2021 will be eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) under the Job Ready Graduate scheme. Costs are indicated on the Admissions and Fees Tab.

General program information
- Applicants should note that to undertake postgraduate study in many Science disciplines, background knowledge relevant to the discipline of interest is required. In most instances this is equivalent to 8 courses (an ANU Major) in the relevant discipline (cognate area). A general indication of required background knowledge for courses in the disciplines below is provided for ease of reference:
- ASTR Astronomy and Astrophysics - a background in Physics and Maths is required, Astronomy is recommended.
- BIOL Biology - a background in Biology is required, and at least 1 year of Chemistry at a tertiary level is recommended.
- CHMD Culture, Health and Medicine - no prior knowlege is required.
- EMSC Earth and Marine Science - a background in Earth Sciences is recommended, as this is an interdisciplinary field some knowledge of Physics, Maths and Chemistry is also recommended.
- ENVS Environmental Science - a background in Environmental Science is strongly recommended. Please check individual courses for more details.
- MATH Mathematics - a background in Mathematics is required.
- MEDN Medical Science - a background in Biology and/or Medical Science studies is required plus, and at least 1 year of Chemistry at a tertiary level is recommended
- NEUR Neuroscience - a background in Biology and/or Medical Science studies is required plus, and at least 1 year of Chemistry at a tertiary level is recommended
- PHYS Physics - a background in Physics and Maths is required.
- POPH Population Health - no prior knowlege is required.
- SCOM Science Communication - no prior knowlege is required but some knowledge of Science and/or Science Communication is recommended.
- This program is a standalone qualification but can also be used as pathway to further postgraduate study. Students who successfully complete the Graduate Certificate of Science with a GPA of 5.00/7.00 or above may be eligible to apply for admission to a Master degree offered by the College of Science or the College of Health and Medicine at the Australian National University.
Courses successfully completed in the Graduate Certificate of Science may be credited towards a Master degree, where eligible.

Academic Advice
The Graduate Certificate of Science is generally used as a pathway to Masters program. The first step to enrolling in your new program is to seek academic advice in order to discuss the courses you will be studying. This is done by making an appointment to meet with the program of the Masters program towards which you are working.
Your academic advice session is a great opportunity to discuss with the convener the direction in which you want your studies to go. The convener will be able to advise you about course selection and content of courses that you will undertake as part of your program. Ideally you should bring along a copy of your academic record/academic transcripts as these will greatly assist your convener when giving you course advice.
