This course is designed to familiarise students with the components of the financial system as well as to introduce them to the three basic ideas underpinning finance: the time value of money, diversification, and arbitrage. The aim of the course is to provide students with introductory exposure to financial transactions, institutions and markets including money markets, stock markets, foreign exchange, derivative markets and contracts. It provides students with a solid foundation for later studies in finance.
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Explain in detail financial transactions, institutions and markets, including money markets, stock markets, foreign exchange, derivatives markets and contracts;
- Discuss in detail the concept of time value of money and calculate the value of cash flows relating to a number of financial instruments;
- Explain in detail the concept of diversification, including the risk and return relationship and calculate optimal weights for a portfolio comprising of two financial assets; and,
- Discuss in detail concepts of arbitrage, and utilise derivatives for risk management purposes.
Students undertaking this course will be taught fundamental skills in Finance that will be applied to real life applications. Students will also be shown how these techniques are applied to research today.

The only additional course costs are a non-programmable scientific calculator (not a financial calculator).
Examination Material or equipment
The quizzes will be conducted over Wattle and will be open book. Students are required to ensure that the technology needed for the online quiz is reliable.
The final exam will be conducted in-person on campus. It will be a closed-book exam. Centrally scheduled examinations through Examinations, and will be timetabled prior to the examination period. Please check ANU Timetabling for further information.

You final mark for the course will be based on the raw marks allocated for each of your assessment items. However, your final mark may not be the same number as produced by that formulate, as marks may be scaled. Any scaling applied will preserve the rank order of raw marks (i.e. if your raw mark exceeds that of another student, then your scaled mark will exceed or be the same as the scaled mark of that student), and may result in a score that is either higher or lower than the raw mark calculated.

The ANU is using Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. In rare cases where online submission using Turnitin software is not technically possible; or where not using Turnitin software has been justified by the Course Convener and approved by the Associate Dean (Education) on the basis of the teaching model being employed; students shall submit assessment online via ‘Wattle’ outside of Turnitin, or failing that in hard copy, or through a combination of submission methods as approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Moderation of Assessment
Marks that are allocated during Semester are to be considered provisional until formalised by the College examiners meeting at the end of each Semester. If appropriate, some moderation of marks might be applied prior to final results being released.
Course content delivery will take the form of in-person weekly lectures and workshops. The weekly tutorials will be delivered on-campus only. Student consultations will be conducted over Zoom.

Assessment Task 1

Online Quizzes - 60 mins duration
Students will be required to sit 3 online quizzes throughout the semester.
· These quizzes will be run according to the schedule in the "Class Structure and Content" section of this summary (unless otherwise stated by the lecturer).
· Students will be given one hour in which to complete the quiz, with the quiz to be held during the workshop time in the designated week. Students will not attend the workshop in those weeks, but rather sit the online quiz.
· Students’ best 2 marks will count towards 40% of their overall course grade.
· Quizzes will be marked online within 2 weeks of the quiz being held.
Assessment Task 2

Final Exam - 180 mins duration

Value or weighting: 60%
• The final exam will cover content contained in Week 1 through 12, inclusive.
• The final exam will be held in-person and on-campus during the Semester 2 final exam period. It is to be completed individually.
• This is a closed-book exam.
• A mixture of theory and practical (numerical) questions will be asked. Students will need to review and revise all material pertaining to the course.
• The exam will consist of calculation and theory-based multiple-choice as well as short answer questions.
• Students will be provided with further details regarding the exam by the end of Week 10.
• The exam will have a length of 180 minutes,.

No late submission of assessment tasks will be permitted. If an assessment task is not submitted by the due date and time, a mark of 0 will be awarded.

Extensions and Penalties
Extensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure. Extensions may be granted for assessment pieces that are not examinations or take-home examinations. If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.
Distribution of grades policy
Academic Quality Assurance Committee monitors the performance of students, including attrition, further study and employment rates and grade distribution, and College reports on quality assurance processes for assessment activities, including alignment with national and international disciplinary and interdisciplinary standards, as well as qualification type learning outcomes.
Since first semester 1994, ANU uses a grading scale for all courses. This grading scale is used by all academic areas of the University.
