This is an advanced research course that offers students an individualised course of study under the guidance of a supervisor. It involves in-depth reading, analysis and writing in topic areas directly relevant to their thesis research. The course topics and readings are to be negotiated by the supervisor and the student, and the course will have a particular focus on academic skills development.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- develop a firm grounding in the research methods of the particular research discipline;
- engage in meaningful discussion regarding the challenges of exploring their research topic/area;
- critically analyse, reflect on, and closely examine their own project;
- apply the technical research skills involved in citing and synthesising a wide range of literature;
- establish a strong analytical and structural framework for their thesis.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload
130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 12 hours of contact over 12 weeks with supervisor
b) 118 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.
