Clinical Coursework II comprises a number of modules covering a range of topics designed to further advance the students’ knowledge of clinical theory and practice and relevant research methodology such as:

  • Contextualising Professional Psychology. This module provides students with an opportunity to consider important contextual factors in psychological ethics, theory, research and practice with diverse populations over the lifespan. The module will address key determinants (e.g., social, structural, economic and interpersonal factors) and contextual factors (e.g., geographic and cultural) in mental health. Students will also have the opportunity to learn from a variety of guest lecturers and engage in a range of practical components in which they will extend their communication, interview and counselling skills to support appropriate interactions with people from diverse backgrounds


  • Clinical Research Methods. The focus of this module is on research and statistical issues relevant to working as clinical psychologists. The module will cover clinical experimental designs (randomised controlled trials); utilising existing data including systematic reviews and meta-analysis; research strategies in applied settings (e.g., single-case design); research ethics with clinical participants; science communication (developing dissemination skills via practice and feedback), and advanced psychological measurement for scale development (item response theory; factor analysis).

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Demonstrate competences in doing evidence based practice pertaining to clinical practice and decision making.
  2. Demonstrate competencies in the design of a clinically relevant research project. 
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of advanced psychometric approaches and competency in the development of a psychological scale.
  4. Apply advanced psychological knowledge to culturally responsive interventions in the area of clinical psychology.
  5. Critically analyse the practice of psychology for people from a range of backgrounds.
  6. Explain key approaches to contextualizing psychological assessments and interventions for a range of clients and clinical settings.
  7. Demonstrate competencies in communication, assessment and counselling skills relevant to working with people from a range of backgrounds across the lifespan.

Enrolees must be eligible for registration as a psychologist in the ACT. This course is assessed on a Course Requirement Satisfied (CRS) or Fail basis. Students must satisfactorily complete all assessment tasks in order to pass the course.

Workload

130 hours throughout the semester including:

Contextualising Professional Psychology: Weeks 5 - 9 and Week 11

Face-to face component which may consist of six days of 6 hours of mandatory workshop (total 36 hours)

 

Clinical Research Methods: Weeks 1 - 4, Weeks 7-8, and Week 10

Face-to face component which may consist of five x 3hr workshops two x 7 hours workshops per semester (total 29 hours).


Approximately 195 hours of self-study which will include preparation for lectures, presentations and other assessment tasks.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be studying a Master of Clinical Psychology (7601) and have successfully completed PSYC8101. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed PSYC8012 or PSYC9412.

Assumed Knowledge

A basic understanding of clinical diagnosis, assessment and treatment comparable to undergraduate level abnormal psychology.
