The major in Corporate Sustainability examines the increasing constraints placed on business by both the natural environment and society and how corporations may create long-term value through innovative responses to these constraints. It is truly multidisciplinary, drawing together insights from management, marketing, accounting, economics, environmental science, and politics.


Application of knowledge and skills

Graduates with a major in Corporate Sustainability will demonstrate the application of corporate sustainability knowledge and skills:

  • with initiative and judgement in planning, problem-solving and decision making in professional practice and/or scholarship;
  • to adapt knowledge and skills in diverse contexts; and
  • with responsibility and accountability for own learning and professional practice and in collaboration with others within broad parameters.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate a broad and coherent knowledge of corporate sustainability concepts, issues and practices from multidisciplinary perspectives;
  2. Exercise critical thinking and judgement to identify and solve corporate sustainability problems;
  3. Apply theoretical and practical knowledge to analyse sustainability issues in business, market, social, ethical and regulatory context; and
  4. Communicate sustainability knowledge and ideas in a clear and coherent way.

Students who are doing an AATD course(s) as part of their major studies are expected to choose a KNoT (project) that is highly relevant to that major. Otherwise, the expectation is that you do the AATD course(s) as a general elective and choose another course from the major list of electives to count towards the 48 units study requirement.


Alternative Course Study

On a case-by-case basis, the RSM Deputy Director (Education) may approve alternative courses to be counted towards the major restricted choice study requirements. Such reasons may be (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Supporting applications for global exchange opportunities for overseas study
  • Unexpected change in course class offerings that impact study plans
  • New (or other) courses being offered that complement existing courses within the major


Requests are to be made to the RSM Deputy Director (Education) via email to CBE Student Services (info.cbe@anu.edu.au), and for each alternative course nominated, please include the following details:

  • Course code and course name
  • 1–2 sentences to justify the relevance of the alternative course to this major
  • 1–2 sentences to explain how the alternative course supports your future career ambitions/prospects
