This course gives students a thorough grounding in the management of technology in an organisational context, placing particular emphasis on the Chief Information Officer perspective. The unit material complements applied student knowledge with a theoretical technology management foundation. Topics are presented from a textbook and, where appropriate, relevant readings from the contemporary literature are used to present competing points of view. Topics include the information system in the organisation, information system planning, enterprise systems in context, systems to support operations and management, policy development and directive management, and technology economics. Students are introduced to the practical aspects of this area through a series of organisational case studies.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of business information systems strategic planning and management principles, concepts, and theories;
- Apply evidence in formulating business information systems strategic plans;
- Demonstrate an understanding of internal and external dimensions of business information systems strategic planning with appropriate theories, models and examples;
- Demonstrate ethical judgement in business information systems strategic planning, consistent with the ACS Code of Ethics;
- Communicate effectively in oral and written forms about business information systems strategic planning principles, concepts and theories;
- Undertake an applied team research project to formulate business information systems strategy that is underpinned by tactical plans and technical solutions.

Workload
Students taking this course are expected to commit 130 hours to completing the work. For semester length offerings this will typically include 3 hours per week in class and at least 7 hours a week on average (excluding non-teaching weeks) on course reading, research, writing and assignment work.
