Studying Public Law involves examining the constitutional foundations, institutions and processes through which public power is created, exercised and constrained in Australia. It focuses on the structure of Australian government and the legal principles that regulate decision-making, accountability and the Rule of Law.
This specialisation analyses the design, implementation and effectiveness of Australian public law and regulatory frameworks, including constitutional law, administrative law and the operation of public institutions. While relevant comparative perspectives may be considered, the primary focus is on the Australian legal system and its development.
Through a flexible range of courses, students develop strong analytical and research capability in Australian public law, preparing them for careers in government, regulatory agencies, public interest practice and private practice in areas involving public law.
Learning Outcomes
- Review, analyse and synthesise knowledge from primary and secondary legal sources to critically evaluate public law and its social, ethical and cultural impact on society.
- Undertake technical legal research and apply legal or interdisciplinary research methodologies to evaluate and synthesise findings and identify solutions to public law problems.
- Interpret and communicate public law knowledge to a variety of legal and non-legal audiences in a range of oral and written formats.
- Exercise independence and professional judgement, and critically reflect on personal, professional, ethical and cross-cultural capability in public law.
