This semester long internship with available arts cultural institutions is a prestigious and demanding program, in which the internship convenor places Art History and Curatorship Honours students.  The Internship is designed to provide the student with practical insights into the activities and the workings of an art museum or gallery.  The specific nature of the contact work will depend on the requirements of the art museum specialist supervisor, who may include curators, research program managers, registrars and learning and access programmers. The internship is aimed at providing an opportunity for learning about the field in preparation towards and art museum career.

  1. Participate in the workings of an arts and cultural institution in co-operation with specialist staff.
  2. Engage with a specified art museum project related to audience development.
  3. Identify an art object to research and deliver a floor talk about that object to an audience.
  4. Develop the writing  of an extended label and caption on an art object/s in an art exhibition.
  5. Write an exhibition review that engages a wide reader audience.
  6. Demonstrate strong analytic and evaluative skills by researching and writing a documented paper on an issue of contemporary interest and polemic related to art museum and arts industry practice in Australia and/or internationally.

Indicative Assessment

20 minute floor talk and a written research report of 1000 words: 15% (LO 1, 2, 3)

Extended label and caption: 15% (LO 2, 3, 4)

Exhibition review article: 1000 words 20% (LO 1, 2, 5)

Research essay: 3000 words 50% (LO 1, 2, 6)

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from a combination of supervisor meetings, attendance at internship placement and applied research and writing. The structure and delivery of contact hours is dependent on internship placement.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be studying Bachelor of Arts (Honours) (HARTS or HARTS2), Bachelor of Art History and Curatorship (Honours) (HAHCR), or completion of 144 units towards the Bachelor of Philosophy (Arts) (APHAR or APNAR). You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed ARTH8015.
