This course provides an introduction to the analysis and design of digital systems and microprocessors. Key topics follow. Review of combinational logic analysis and design. Analysis and design of synchronous finite state machines and register transfer level systems. Computer-aided design of digital electronic systems using real-world software packages. A detailed introduction to the VERILOG hardware description language. Extensive hardware labs involving the implementation of digital systems in FPGA programmable logic devices. Microprocessor devices, basic architecture principles and instruction sets. Hardware interpretation of instruction execution. Basics of the Assembly language and introductory C programming. Co-design of digital hardware and microprocessor systems. Simple embedded programming applied to the AVR microcontroller architecture.

On successful completion of this course, students should have the skills and knowledge to:

  1. Explain the fundamental principles of sequential digital circuits and finite state machines.
  2. Compare and describe the architecture and fundamental concepts of the modern embedded microprocessor systems.
  3. Synthesise finite state machines using hardware description languages, field programmable gate array boards, and using relevant structural and behavioural design.
  4. Design an embedded system using C/C++ programming and microprocessor boards.
  5. Analyse critically, and evaluate the performance of systems against the design requirements.
  6. Plan, execute and report on a small project working in a group, communicating effectively in written form about their work

Workload

2 lectures per week (total 3 hrs) for 4 semester weeks and 1 lecture per week (total 2 hours) for 8 semester weeks; 1x practical labs a week for 7 semester weeks (4x3hr labs and 3x3.5hr labs); 1x1hr tutorial per week for 7 semester weeks; plus an average of 6-8 hours/week on reading, working on online course activities and/or conducting assignment work

Requisite and Incompatibility

ENGN2218 or COMP2300. It should be noted that students who have done COMP2300 and have no engineering background may need to undertake some independent review of introductory electrical knowledge such as basic physics and circuit theory. Incompatible with ENGN6213.
