In this introductory course students begin to develop basic listening and reading comprehension, as well as oral and written German communication skills, including culturally appropriate language use. The course furthermore provides an introduction to basic German grammar and training in language learning strategies. Students are introduced to first aspects of life and culture of the German-speaking societies.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. engage in simple communication of predictable content in spoken and written German about topics covered in the course, such as personal details, especially in small group contexts;
  2. read and listen for gist in more complex and/or more rapidly spoken German;
  3. facilitate and reflect on their learning, e.g. by applying language learning strategies and responding to feedback;
  4. demonstrate an understanding of aspects of life and culture of the German speaking societies, including basic principles of culturally appropriate German language use; and
  5. demonstrate general expertise in critical thinking and reflective learning through an awareness, identification, and appreciation of differences between their own language/culture and German-speaking cultures.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Two in-class tests: Listening and reading comprehension, grammar and vocabulary, written communication (30) [LO 2,3,4,5]
  2. Two in-class writing assignments (100-200 words) (25) [LO 2,3,5]
  3. Two oral exams (10 minutes each) (25) [LO 1,4,5]
  4. Homework (10) [LO 3,4,5]
  5. Participation (10) [LO 1,4,5]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:

a) 48 hours of contact over 12 weeks, including peer-to-peer, online and tutorial activities, and

b) 82 hours of independent student learning.
