Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

1. Be respectful and courteous to patients and their families, to administrative, nursing, allied health, medical staff, to other students, to academic staff and to members of the public.
2. Observe patient confidentiality and privacy in clinical and non-clinical settings and on social media networks (including closed groups).
3. Obtain informed consent from patients, including consent to participate in procedures and examination of sedated or anaesthetised patients.
4. Participate in and/or facilitate learning in a respectful and constructive manner, in clinical and non-clinical settings, with peers, clinical supervisors and academic staff.
5. Listen and contribute in a positive and supportive manner and handle differences of opinion with respect and consideration.
6. Arrive on time or alert to lateness
7. Demonstrate reflective practice, including self-appraisal, and appropriately seek feedback from patients, peers, clinical supervisors and other clinical team members.

This course is assessed on a Course Requirement Satisfied (CRS) or Fail basis. Students must satisfactorily complete all assessment tasks in order to pass the course.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

This course must be enrolled in twice over two consecutive semesters.

As a co-requisite, zero unit course, the workload is covered in the co-requisite.

Professionalism

• Medical students will be expected to demonstrate capabilities consistent with those of a medical professional, including a commitment to making the care of patients their priority, and to practise safely and effectively, treat people with dignity and respect, and be aware of the limits of their own knowledge, skills and health. They will also be required to comply with the law, regulations and any other university codes or policies.

Insight into their own health and behaviour

• Medical students will be expected to demonstrate an ability to recognise when they experience poor health and put in place effective processes to ensure their own health or behaviours do not pose a risk to others.

Team work

• Medical students will be expected to work willingly and cohesively as part of a team, taking responsibility for their actions as well as recognising and respecting the skills of other professionals.
