SELT Survey Results

Leadership & Influence in a Complex World is open to students from all academic Colleges. 

The course aims at giving ANU students who have demonstrated potential as change-makers a wide understanding of styles of leadership and influence. In line with the interdisciplinary and peer-learning ethos of Vice-Chancellor's courses, students will be exposed to the varying perspectives different disciplines and individuals have on leadership and influence. The course aims to bring students together early in their degree to make a positive impact on their spheres of influence now and into the future.

Students will be encouraged to design and implement an individual or collaborative leadership initiative at ANU or the broader Canberra community based on I.D.E.A (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility) principles, and will be mentored by an ANU staff member to realise the potential of the project.  

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Formulate a clear personal repertoire of values-based leadership and models of influence.
  2. Evaluate different disciplinary and cultural models of leadership and influence.
  3. Demonstrate skills in collaboration and coordination towards common goals in formal and informal settings.
  4. Design, implement and evaluate a leadership initiative that enhances a community.
  5. Reflect on the nature of leadership and influence in the context of your discipline.

Research-Led Teaching

This course involves students in multi-disciplinary research including (1) different fields that relate to leadership and influence, (2) conducting independent analysis and research on specific topic areas, and (3) engaging in research, data collection and analysis to provide the empirical evidence and case to understand how to enhance the ANU student experience.

Student Feedback

Other Information

Upon successful completion of L&I, students will be awarded a grade of ‘CRS’ (course requirements satisfied). This is not merely a ‘pass/fail’; it is to recognise that students are intrinsically determined to effect change and to alleviate the pressure that grades place on creating change that is outside of your control. The academic quality and commitment to the work are required to be at the ‘Superior’ description or above in the ANU’s Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy. Feedback will be given for work that does not meet this quality descriptor, and students will be given an opportunity to resubmit in line with time frames for the task.

Assessment Requirements

The ANU is using Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website Students may choose not to submit assessment items through Turnitin. In this instance you will be required to submit, alongside the assessment item itself, hard copies of all references included in the assessment item.

Moderation of Assessment

Marks that are allocated during Semester are to be considered provisional until formalised by the College examiners meeting at the end of each Semester. If appropriate, some moderation of marks might be applied prior to final results being released.


Participation is expected in all classes and assessment.

Assessment Task 1

Seminar Presentation/Activity

We will practice a distributed form of leadership by dividing the resources between members of the class, and asking students to lead discussion about the resources in class. In the first six weeks, workshops will be used to synthesise material in small groups, and seminars will be used to share and present the material each week. Seminars may be attended by topic experts as relevant.

Completion Requirement: To meet the requirements of the class, students must contribute to the small group synthesis each of the first six weeks during the Workshop session, and lead at least one week's Seminar discussion/activity.

Assessment Task 2

Value: 40 %
Learning Outcomes: 2,3,4

Collaborative Leadership Project

During the final six weeks of the semester, you will make significant headway on a collaborative project. The scope of the project is to design an intervention that will lead to meaningful, ongoing change: we do not expect that the project will deliver on its full potential during the semester. Collaborative groups will be formed during mid-semester. Students in collaborative groups may work on the same project, or may support each other to realise a set of separate projects.

Completion Requirement: Groups will present their Collaborative Leadership Project during a Project Showcase at the end of semester. To meet the requirements of the class, students must show evidence of their contribution to the collaborative project in their Final Portfolio

Assessment Task 3

Value: 30 %
Learning Outcomes: 3,4

Final Portfolio

The final deliverable will be to present your learning in relation to the content and project through a shared web page. This will be the equivalent of two pages, but it may take different forms (such as video, audio, multimedia). The task will be set around the learning outcomes of the course.

Completion Requirement: To meet the requirements of the class, students must add their contribution to the shared web page by the conclusion of semester.

Hardcopy Submission

For some forms of assessment (hand written assignments, art works, laboratory notes, etc.) hard copy submission is appropriate when approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Hard copy submissions must utilise the Assignment Cover Sheet. Please keep a copy of tasks completed for your records.

Late Submission

Late submission of assessment tasks is not accepted after 10 working days after the due date, or on or after the date specified in the course outline for the return of the assessment item.

Referencing Requirements

Accepted academic practice for referencing sources that you use in presentations can be found via the links on the Wattle site, under the file named “ANU and College Policies, Program Information, Student Support Services and Assessment”. Alternatively, you can seek help through the Students Learning Development website.

Extensions and Penalties

Extensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure The Course Convener may grant extensions for assessment pieces that are not examinations or take-home examinations. If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.

Resubmission of Assignments

Unless specified otherwise in the assessment requirements, resubmissions are permitted up until the due date and time, but not allowed afterwards.

Privacy Notice

The ANU has made a number of third party, online, databases available for students to use. Use of each online database is conditional on student end users first agreeing to the database licensor’s terms of service and/or privacy policy. Students should read these carefully. In some cases student end users will be required to register an account with the database licensor and submit personal information, including their: first name; last name; ANU email address; and other information. In cases where student end users are asked to submit ‘content’ to a database, such as an assignment or short answers, the database licensor may only use the student’s ‘content’ in accordance with the terms of service — including any (copyright) licence the student grants to the database licensor. Any personal information or content a student submits may be stored by the licensor, potentially offshore, and will be used to process the database service in accordance with the licensors terms of service and/or privacy policy. If any student chooses not to agree to the database licensor’s terms of service or privacy policy, the student will not be able to access and use the database. In these circumstances students should contact their lecturer to enquire about alternative arrangements that are available.

Distribution of grades policy

Academic Quality Assurance Committee monitors the performance of students, including attrition, further study and employment rates and grade distribution, and College reports on quality assurance processes for assessment activities, including alignment with national and international disciplinary and interdisciplinary standards, as well as qualification type learning outcomes. Since first semester 1994, ANU uses a grading scale for all courses. This grading scale is used by all academic areas of the University.
