Upon successful completion of this course students should have the skills and knowledge to:1. Demonstrate the reading skills necessary to identify, hypothesise on, and analyse new items of classical Chinese vocabulary and syntax.
2. Produce literary translations from classical Chinese to English.
3. Apply a broad knowledge of Chinese literary history to specific examples.
4. Appraise items of narrative literature in classical Chinese.

The first form of assessment listed above (translation assignments) is designed to develop learning outcomes 2 and 3; the essay is designed to develop learning outcomes 3-5; the final examination is designed to consolidate learning outcome 1.
