- to undertake a brief literature review related to their topic;
- to critically understand the particular development issues related to their topic; and
- to be able scope and design a an applied research activity based on their topic.

1. developed a critical understanding of the theories and issues related to their topic that is necessary for the production of the PhD thesis;

Indicative Assessment
ASSIGNMENT 1 – REGULAR UPDATES (10%)
- Purpose of assignment (Learing Outcome 1 and 2): To demonstrate the student’s ongoing critical engagement with key theories and issues (subtopics) agreed to in establishing the topic discussed in the course.
Due dates: Weeks 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 Value: 10%

ASSIGNMENT 3 Seminar presentation related to learning outcome 2 (25%)
ASSIGNMENT 2 (Final Report)
- Purpose of assignment related to learning outcome 2: To facilitate the students' understanding of the topic they have chosen. 65% 8-10,000 words.
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload
1-2 hours of Seminar plus 5-6 hours of reading and regular research exercises each week.
