This course allows a special topic of study for individuals or small groups of students who wish to gain particular or additional knowledge in a topic in Earth Science not covered in other courses taught at the Research School of Earth Sciences or elsewhere in the University.
This course is worth 3 units and therefore is useful when a student wishes to undertake an intensive short course or a short research project under the supervision of a research scientist at ANU or at an affiliated research institute.
The course is intended mainly for Masters and Honours students. The details of the project will be negotiated between the student and the supervisor/s and be approved by the Research School of Earth Science Associate Director of Education.

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
The nature of this course means that the learning outcomes are very individual and very specific. However, in general, on satisfying the requirements of this course students will have the knowledge and skills to:
1. Plan and engage in a chosen Earth Science topic;
2. Keep accurate and detailed records of work undertaken, including literature review, lab or fieldwork;
3. Work constructively in small teams or individually on real research problems;
4. Interpret the significance of findings within the context of current research directions;
5. Communicate research concepts and contexts clearly and effectively both in writing and orally; and
6. Adapt these research concepts to their own Masters Research project.
UG Version,
1. Plan and engage in an independent and sustained critical investigation and evaluation of a chosen earth science research topic.
2. Systematically identify relevant theory and concepts, relate these to appropriate methodologies and evidence, and draw appropriate conclusions.
3. Keep accurate and detailed records of work undertaken, including literature review, lab or field work.
4. Work constructively with active researchers on real research problems.
5. Critically evaluate their own work and results, as well as results reported in the literature.
6. Communicate research concepts and contexts clearly and effectively both in writing and orally.
Indicative Assessment
Practicals - (20% LO 1-3)
Seminar/Oral Presentation - (20% LO 4-6)
Written Report - (60% LO 1-6)
Additional/different tasks will be included in graduate assignments and examinations, thus distinguishing the undergraduate and graduate assessment.
It is expected that work provided by a Masters student must be more comprehensive than an undergraduate student, particularly to address Learning Outcomes 4 and 6
