The course is for students with a high level of mastery in one of the major Southeast Asian languages taught in the School (Indonesian, Thai, or Vietnamese). Enrolled students conduct an independent research project under of the supervision of the course coordinator (or someone else if deemed necessary and available), on a common theme that may change from semester to semester. Meetings with the course Coordinator or a substitute Supervisor are usually five times in the semester (roughly every two weeks). In these meetings, the lecturer can give broad guidelines in the beginning of the semester. Class meetings are for students to report their work in-progress or discuss the readings assigned by the course coordinator in the semester.

By the end of the course, learners of the Southeast Asian language will have significantly increased their proficiency in reading and writing, and will be able to discuss complex ideas about contemporary issues.
They will also have gained substantial knowledge about recent social, political and cultural developments in the country they study.

A 2,500 word academic paper in the target language (40%), plus the equivalent of a couple of short essays, each 750 words to be prepared off campus (2 x 30%), on a complex aspect of social life in the society where the language is the national or native language to the majority of the population.The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload
Fortnightly meetings with Course Coordinator or Supervisor. Students are expected to read approximately 10 academic and non-academic texts in the target language, each about 6,000 words, and demonstrate the ability to capture the various subtleties and nuances that run through the selected readings.Requisite and Incompatibility
