Program Requirements

The Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics/Juris Doctor vertical double degree requires the completion of 264 units, of which:

A maximum of 60 units may come from completion of 1000-level courses

A minimum of 60 units must come from completion of 2000- and 3000-level courses.

144 units must come from completion of courses from the subject area LAWS Law

A maximum of 36 units may come from completion of 2000-, 3000- and 4000-level courses from the subject area LAWS Law

 

The 264 units must consist of:

144 units from completion of the following Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics vertical double degree component:

120 units from completion of the remaining requirements for the Juris Doctor

 

Students must achieve a minimum 65% weighted average mark in the first 96 units of courses attempted in order to enrol in courses from the subject area LAWS Law.

If the total number of units attempted exceeds 96 in the same teaching period in which the 96th unit is attempted, exactly 96 units will be used in the calculation of the weighted average mark with units from the course with the highest mark in that teaching period applied first followed by further units from courses in that teaching period in descending order of marks.

 

Students must achieve a minimum 65% weighted average mark in the first 144 units of courses attempted in order to proceed to the Juris Doctor vertical double degree component.

If the total number of units attempted exceeds 144 in the same teaching period in which the 144th unit is attempted, exactly 144 units will be used in the calculation of the weighted average mark with units from the course with the highest mark applied first followed by further units from courses in descending order of marks.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the BPPE program is normally based on a combination of the applicant’s qualifications. It is expected that the admission rank required for entry will be approximately 96.

Students must have completed at least 96 units of the BPPE program with an average of 65% in order to commence the LAWS coded courses and must achieve an overall result of at least 65% across the whole BPPE program to transition to the Juris Doctor program.

Internal transfers

No internal transfers will be allowed until Semester 1, 2015 as during 2013/14 the Juris Doctor program will undergo a review.

Adjustment Factors

The National Access Scheme 2014

ANU offers bonus points for nationally strategic senior secondary subjects, and in recognition of difficult circumstances that students face in their studies. 

Bonus points are applied to all applicants with an ATAR at or above 70. Points are awarded in accordance with the approved schedule, and no more than 10 points (maximum 5 academic points and maximum 5 equity points) will be awarded.

Bonus points do not apply to programs with an ATAR cutoff of 98 or higher.

Bonus Points are only awarded to domestic applicants applying for admission through UAC who have not previously attempted tertiary study.

How to apply

Academic Bonus Points: senior secondary students do not need to apply for ANU academic bonus points. They are automatically added in accordance with the schedule.

Educational Access Scheme: senior secondary students do not need to apply if their school is part of the Priority School Funding Program or Country Areas Program. All other applicants should refer to http://www.uac.edu.au/eas/  for more information.

The Juris Doctor is a distinctive program for graduates of non-law disciplines (or non-Australian law degrees). The program consists of compulsory and elective courses. Graduates complete all the academic courses required by Australian Legal Practitioners Admission Boards for admission to legal practice following completion of additional practical training Students have access to dedicated JD courses and other courses offered as part of the LLM program. A small number of LLB electives can also be included in the program of study program can be studied either full or part-time with entry points in the Summer, First semester and Second semester

Please Note: This program isn’t registered on CRICOS therefore students are not eligible for a tertiary coursework student visa. International students may still study programs which are not registered on CRICOS if they are in Australia with another visa which includes study rights, e.g. a diplomatic visa.

International students can combine the BPPE with a number of other degrees as part of the Flexible Double Degrees.

Learning Outcomes

Students who graduate with a Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics, Juris Doctor will be able to:

  1. Identify the principal theoretical approaches to the study of PPE, and the relationships between them;
  2. Identify main currents in the three disciplines of PPE and their theoretical bases;
  3. Define, critically discuss and apply major philosophical theories and approaches to the evaluation of social institutions;
  4. Define, critically discuss and apply the methods of economics to the study of political institutions and processes, and to questions within political philosophy;
  5. Define, critically discuss and apply the core arguments and principles of political economy, public choice and rational choice theory;
  6. Recognise and analyse the different actors, processes and stages involved in formulating public policies;
  7. Analyse practical dilemmas that arise in politics using the theories, approaches and methods of the three main disciplines of PPE;
  8. JD learning objectives remain under revision and will be finalised in 2014 to be consistent with the JD being a Level 9 Masters Extended AQF compliant program.

About this degree

Vertical degree
In a Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics/Juris Doctor vertical degree program you will study a total of 264 units. Typically you will take 4 courses per semester (total of 24 units) as a full time student giving you a total of 24 (6-unit) courses across your whole degree.
You'll need to 15 compulsory courses and an additional course from you choice of ANIP, Economics, Philosophy or Political Science. In addition to this you will need to take the 4 compulsory LAWS courses at 6000/7000/8000 level.

You'll also get to choose four electives from courses right across ANU. You can use these electives to try a range of courses or to take a minor in a non-Arts subject.

Please refer to the Juris Doctor degree requirements http://programsandcourses.anu.edu.au/2016/program/MJD.  You will not commence the Juris Doctor degree until you have completed the Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics with the required admission requirements.

Enrolment Status

While it's possible to enrol in fewer courses per semester, which is called studying part-time, it will take you longer to finish your program and get your degree.
You need to enrol in courses for both First Semester and Second Semester.
You can’t study more than four courses (24 units) per semester, eight for the year.
You may take 1000-level courses later in your program. But remember you can’t count more than ten 1000-level courses (60 units) towards your single degree.

Important things to keep in mind when choosing your 1000-level courses

When you enrol for the first time you will study ‘1000-level’ courses. These courses have ‘1’ as the first number in their course code, such as ARTS1234.
