Program Requirements

The Master of Science Communication requires the completion of 96 units, which must consist of:

24 units from completion of the following compulsory courses

SCOM8700 Master of Science Communication Research Project (Hong Kong)

SCOM8714 Communicating Science with the Public (Hong Kong)

A minimum of 36 units from completion of courses from the following list:

SCOM8703 Science in Popular Fiction (Hong Kong)

SCOM8712 Science Communication and the Web (Hong Kong)

SCOM8715 Speaking of Science (Hong Kong)

SCOM8721 Ethics, Issues and Consequences of Science (Hong Kong)

SCOM8727 Science and Public Policy (Hong Kong)

SCOM8729 Cross Cultural Perspectives in Science Communication (Hong Kong)

Admission Requirements

A Bachelor degree or international equivalent with an average mark of at least 70% and at least 8 courses in cognate disciplines.

All applicants must meet the University’s English Language Admission Requirements for Students.

Applicants with a Bachelor Degree or Graduate Certificate in a cognate discipline may be eligible for up to 24 units (one semester) of credit.

Applicants with a Graduate Diploma, Honours or higher degree in a cognate discipline may be eligible for up to 48 units (one year) of credit.

Cognate disciplines

Mathematical Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, Chemical Sciences, Earth Sciences, Biological Sciences, Environmental Studies, Other Natural and Physical Sciences, Information Technology, Engineering and Related Technologies, Health and Education.

The Master of Science Communication (Hong Kong Plan) is a new program offered by the Australian National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science ANU through The University of Hong Kong School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE). The program provides Hong Kong civil servants, science centre managers and senior secondary school science teachers with the skills and knowledge necessary to design and manage science communication programs. Most of the courses in the program will be taught through intensive face to face teaching in Hong Kong followed by online learning, with some courses delivered completely online. The medium of instruction is English.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the skills and knowledge to:

  1. Demonstrate mastery of the theoretical knowledge underpinning science communication practice
  2. Identify, apply and evaluate science communication strategies for diverse audiences, using a range of means, media, and technologies.
  3. Appraise and reflect upon the interaction of interests, contexts and people shaping science, including the social and ethical responsibilities of science and society in the modern world
  4. Develop appropriate qualitative and quantitative research tools and strategies to investigate, justify and interpret science communication theories, methods and conclusions
