This course is designed for Independent level Standard Modern Chinese language students as a course in Chinese-English interpretation.  It will introduce the three different forms of interpretation including simultaneous interpretation, consecutive interpretation and sight interpretation. The course is intended to equip students with interpretation skills and serve as a foundation course for further Chinese-English interpretation courses.    

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills at an Independent level of Standard Modern Chinese to:

1. Interpret a range of spoken discourses from Chinese into English and vice versa, focusing on accuracy and fluency;
2. Critique the quality of an accomplished interpretation;
3. Complete an interpretation task in real life.

Other Information

This is a co-taught course. Any cap on enrolments in one course applies to both courses combined.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

Three contact hours per week. The total workload for the course is 130 hours including independent study. 

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed CHIN3025 or have been permitted entry based on the results of the Chinese language placement test. Incompatible with CHIN6216.
