In this internship course, students in the MA program in Culture, Health, and Medicine will apply the theoretical knowledge and tools gained in coursework to an internship of their own design. Placement at an organisation in the fields of health care, medicine, policy, or research is arranged on an individual basis by each student through negotiation with the potential internship organisation and the course convenor. The objective is to acquire practical experience working in a professional capacity and translate that experience into a research project that fulfills the academic requirements.

  3. Gain insight into the operations of an organisation through a professional capacity and receive feedback on performance from a practitioner in the relevant field of interest.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

Students will establish specific internship contact hours through negotiations with the host organisation and this may vary by student, however, it is expected that the student will devote at least 10 hours per week during the semester. In addition to the internship, each student will submit journal entries and work on a final research project based on the internship experience.

Assumed Knowledge

Students need to have completed three courses in the MA program in Culture, Health, and Medicine with at least a Distinction in each course or by permission of the course convenor. Students who do not meet the course requirements must have prior knowledge and experience that ensures sufficient preparation for the internship. Student qualifications to undertake an internship will be assessed by the course convenor. The student can enrol in the course after the placement is confirmed with the supervisor at the host organisation. Students need to be able to independently locate and negotiate the terms of the internship placement with a potential host organisation.
