Readings from representative works of pre-modern, modern and contemporary Japanese literature

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills at an Advanced level of Japanese to:
1.    Demonstrate advanced language skills in reading, writing, literary analysis and debate in Japanese and an understanding of some of the features of Japanese literature and culture.
2.    Interact confidently with a variety of reading materials from representative works of pre-modern, modern and contemporary Japanese literature.
3.    Present academic arguments fluently and and with confidence, on issues drawn from Japanese literature through the ages.
4.    Demonstrate information gathering skills and the ability to compose academic essays on Japanese literature.

Students who successfully complete this course will typically achieve a level of proficiency roughly equivalent to JLPT N2 to N3, depending on their performance and degree of engagement.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course, you must have previously completed JPNS2015 with a grade of at least 60 (CR) or above, or have completed JPNS3005, JPNS3006 or JPNS3007, or have been permitted entry based on the results of the Japanese language placement test. You must not have previously completed, or concurrently enrolled in JPNS3013, JPNS3023, JPNS3024 or JPNS3102. Incompatible with JPNS6508.
