Special Topic for 2018: Tobacco LitigationThis topic examines various aspects of the different international and domestic legal disputes around tobacco. The topic will examine (i) the challenge to tobacco plain packaging laws in international investment treaty laws; (ii) the WTO dispute over plain packaging and (iii) the issue of liability in the context of tobacco.
The WTO dispute over plain packaging deals with international intellectual property laws and global health. What is at stake in this dispute is the right of commercial actors to use their trademarks in the course of trade and commerce. Likewise, the relationship between the WTO treaties and public health concerns is also central to this dispute.
The increasing employment of plain packaging measures and the growing awareness of health issues means that the various disputes around tobacco have far-reaching implications. It is likely that in future years other industries where addiction is a factor in consumption will also be affected by regulation. This course will examine whether the disputes over tobacco have any relevance for the alcohol, sugar, fast food and gambling industries.
This topic will offer students a unique insight into one of the most pressing and multi-faceted disputes in international law. This course is relevant to those students with an interest in international law, international trade law, public health and commercial and consumer law.
Special Topic for 2018: Space Law
Space Law examines the underlying legal principles that specifically regulate the use, exploration and exploitation of space This course will analyse how these and other principles of International Law can and should be applied to the many different State and private commercial uses of outer space.

Students must rely on the Means of Assessment which will be posted to the Wattle course site approximately 4 weeks prior to the commencement of the course.
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload
26 contact hours of face-to-face teaching over 4 days. The course will require advance preparation through the assigned readings. It is not anticipated that students will spend in excess of 120 hours on this course (class preparation, class time and assessment combined).

Assumed Knowledge
Students taking this course are expected to have a good knowledge of general international law. Prior completion of LAWS8183 Advanced Principles of International Law would be an advantage. Prior completion of LAWS8182 Principles of International Law is required.Fees
