Students will shape a large-scale individual project, for medium to large-sized ensemble which may include the ensemble(s) in residence. Drawing upon multiple compositional skills acquired from their prior study of composition, students have the opportunity to shape their own projects, under faculty guidance. Classwork will focus on professional skills development, score and parts creation, advanced notation, issues of aesthetic and technique, along with industry skills development.

2. Critically analyse a diverse range of music through a sophisticated use of relevant theories and methods;
3. Create and present a portfolio of compositions and arrangements which demonstrate the mastery of traditional and contemporary compositional techniques in a wide spectrum of styles and genres; and
4. Communicate clearly the creative decisions made in the course of composing, arranging and sound designs and how these relate to relevant historical traditions or precedents.
Indicative Assessment

A written exegesis (c. 2,500 words) describing the rationale for the creative decisions made (15%) [Learning Outcomes 3-4]

Workload
260 hours of total student learning time made up from:a) 48 hours of contact: 24 hours of lectures and 12 hours of workshop and workshop-like activities (both cotaught with MUSI3315), and 12 hours of individual supervision.
b) 212 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.
