 Students will shape a large-scale individual project, for medium to large-sized ensemble which may include the ensemble(s) in residence. Drawing upon multiple compositional skills acquired from their prior study of composition, students have the opportunity to shape their own projects, under faculty guidance. Classwork will focus on professional skills development, score and parts creation, advanced notation, issues of aesthetic and technique, along with industry skills development.

1. Produce professional quality creative work that reflects the student's individual musical interests and goals;
2. Critically analyse a diverse range of music through a sophisticated use of relevant theories and methods;
3. Create and present a portfolio of compositions and arrangements which demonstrate the mastery of traditional and contemporary compositional techniques in a wide spectrum of styles and genres; and
4. Communicate clearly the creative decisions made in the course of composing, arranging and sound designs and how these relate to relevant historical traditions or precedents.

Indicative Assessment

A substantial portfolio of original compositions and/or arrangements and/or sound design projects (scores, recordings and/or multimedia) (75%) [Learning Outcomes 1-3]
 
Two Analysis assignments, 5% each (total 10%) [Learning Outcome 2]
 
A written exegesis (c. 2,500 words) describing the rationale for the creative decisions made (15%) [Learning Outcomes 3-4]
 

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

260 hours of total student learning time made up from:
 a) 48 hours of contact: 24 hours of lectures and 12 hours of workshop and workshop-like activities (both cotaught with MUSI3315), and 12 hours of individual supervision.
 b) 212 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be enrolled in the Master of Music (MMUSI) or Master of Music (Advanced) (VMUSI). You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed MUSI3315

Assumed Knowledge

Composition standard equivalent of completion of a major in composition.
