This course allows a special topic of study for individuals or small groups of students who wish to gain particular or additional knowledge in a topic in environment and society not covered in other courses taught in the School or elsewhere in the University. Depending on the topic, students may be required to develop a guided reading program, and/or to take part in selected lectures, workshops, tutorials, seminars, discussion groups, field trips and other activities.

 

From 2014 this course will be available as a variable unit course 6 - 12 units.

1. Pursue guided investigation of  a topic relevant to the environment, analyse and synthesise relevant knowledge, and communicate that learning in seminar and written formats. (LO1)

Indicative Assessment

The nature and weightings of assessment items will be customised in negotiation with each student.

For students enrolled in the 6 unit course assessment is based on:

• Development and presentation of a learning plan (LO 1)

• Presentation of one or more short seminars (LO 1)

• A summary paper or papers of 5000 words in total (LO 1)

 

For students enrolled in the 12 unit course assessment is based on:

• Development and presentation of a learning plan (LO 1)

• Presentation of two or more short seminars (LO 1)

• A summary paper or papers of 10,000 words in total (LO 1)

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

Students enrolled in the 6 unit course are expected to devote at least 12 hours a week to guided readings and/ or attending selected lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials, and supporting work.

 

Students enrolled in the 12 unit course are expected to devote at least 21 hours per week to guided readings and/or attending selected lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials, and supporting work.
