This course is in two parts. Part A is a self-paced online module that provides students with the theoretical content and practical skills to design and develop a legal app that can be used in most common law jurisdictions.  The particular legal process that this app will streamline is the generation of a defence. The app will also automate the production of two additional key documents for the preparation of a defendant's case. The defence generator will be a precedent, a checklist, and a risk management tool, all combined into one bespoke easy-to-use product. This module takes approximately 12 hours to complete and culminates in an online quiz to assess your design decisions. Upon completion, students will receive a certificate of competency from Neota Logic. During the process of developing the app, students will submit researched and referenced blog posts about their understanding of the rules of pleading and best practice in relation to legal app design. In Part B of this course, students will research and submit an essay that explores the risks and benefits of using artificial intelligence and new technologies in legal contexts.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Synthesise legal knowledge and apply it to a complex legal problem
  2. Incorporate professional rules and legislation into legal risk analysis
  3. Engage in original and critical reflection on the use of AI in legal processes
  4. Communicate legal ideas effectively both verbally and in writing
  5. Research, structure and sustain a complex legal argument in relation to the use of AI in the law

Indicative Assessment

  1. Task 1 - Three blog posts (2,400 words total; 800 words per blog) (30) [LO 1,2,3,4,5]
  2. Task 2 - App development quiz (20) [LO 1,2,3]
  3. Task 3 - Research essay (3,600 words) (50) [LO 1,2,3,4,5]

Workload

The course is self-paced and conducted entirely online. The course will also require advanced preparation through assigned readings. In total, it is anticipated that the hours required for completion of this course (class preparation, teaching and completion of assessment) will not exceed 120 hours. To enrol in this course you must be studying a: Master of Laws (7300XLLM, MLLM), Master of Laws in Migration (NLLML), Master of Laws in International Law (NLLIL), Master of Laws in Environmental Law (NLLEN), Master of Laws in Law, Governance & Development (NLLGD), Master of Laws in International Security Law (NLLSL), Master of Laws in Government and Regulation (NLLGR), Master of Legal Practice (MLEGP); OR Juris Doctor (7330XJD, 7330HJD or MJD) and have completed or be completing five 1000 or 6100 level LAWS courses; OR Graduate Certificate of Law (CLAW) and have completed or be completing LAWS8586 Law and Legal Institutions; OR Graduate Certificate of New Technologies Law and have completed or be completing LAWS8407 Digital Economies and the Law; OR Master of Military Law (MMILL) Students undertaking any ANU graduate program may apply for this course. Enrolments are accepted on a case-by-case basis. Please contact the ANU College of Law for permission number.
