In Sem 2 2022, this course is on campus with remote adjustments only for participants with unavoidable travel restrictions/visa delays.

The course will involve seminars and/or research programs to be supervised by staff members or visitors to the ANU. The format of this course will depend on the availability and interests of staff in given years. Topic options will be announced on the RSP web page prior to the commencement of the semester. Note. This is an Honours Pathway Course that involves material of a greater conceptual difficulty and research orientation than non-Honours Pathway courses.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Pursue a sustained, guided critical investigation and evaluation of a topic relevant to psychology.
  2. Systematically identify relevant theory and concepts, relate these to appropriate methodologies and evidence, and draw appropriate conclusions.
  3. Work constructively with active researchers on issues relevant to psychology.
  4. Communicate research concepts and results effectively in appropriate formats.

The Special Topics course can be completed a maximum of two times; students cannot repeat the course with an identical topic.

Indicative Assessment

  1. The nature and weighting of assessment items will vary widely and be customised in negotiation with each student depending on the Special Topic. An example assessment structure is: (null) [LO null]
  2. Review of the literature to develop a learning/research plan (30) [LO 1,2,3]
  3. Presentation of a theoretical or empirical project (30) [LO 1,2,3,4]
  4. A summary paper (40) [LO 1,2,3,4]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

The expected workload will consist of approximately 130 hours throughout the semester which will include regular meetings with the supervisor and a large component of self-study which will include preparation for any presentations and other assessment tasks.

A permission code is required to enrol in this course. Students admitted to this course will usually require a minimum average mark of 65 in Psychology courses.
