Each special topic is a unique course in Australian Indigenous Studies (AuIS) or in one of the other fields in which Indigenous Studies has been developed around the planet. Each topic varies, reflecting the interests, authority and expertise of those teaching the course. The mode of delivery and location of this courses varies. Some topics are taught intensively, others are taught seminar-long, on campus, or online. Some topics are taught in-place and off-campus. All are taught on-Country. All courses centre the knowledge, perspectives and ways of knowing of Indigenous peoples' scholarship.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. synthesise First Nations and other Indigenous people's knowledge or knowledges taught in this course;
  2. demonstrate insight into First Nations and other Indigenous people's perspectives taught in the course; and
  3. demonstrate insight into theoretical perspectives, methodologies from the discipline of Indigenous Studies that arise in this course, including those relating to standpoint.

Work Integrated Learning

Fieldwork

All are taught on-Country and centre on the knowledge, perspectives and ways of knowing of Indigenous peoples' scholarship which can best be learned in an immersive, on-Country experience.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

For 6 unit course offering - 130 hours of total student learning time. Indicatively, this can include 36 hours of contact and 94 hours of independent student research, reading, viewing, etc and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course, you must have completed at least 6-units of an Indigenous Studies (INDG) coded course, or seek permission of the convener. Autumn 2023: Permission is required from the convenor to enrol in this course.

You will need to contact the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences to request a permission code to enrol in this course.

Assumed Knowledge

Assumed knowledge of shared histories in Australia at a tertiary standard and Indigenous standpoint theory; and, assumed insight into and skills in positionality and reflexivity. INDG1001 and INDG1002 are at least recommended and their completion along with other INDG courses may be requisite to enrolment in the topic.
