This course is available for on-campus & remote (online) learning. All students participate in interactive, real-time classes.

This course introduces students to the techniques of econometrics. The emphasis is on the essential ideas and applications of econometric methods, with the material derived using a mixture of rigour and intuition. The course covers appropriate tools for cross-sectional (observations on several economic units - usually countries, firms or households - at a single point in time), time series (observations for one economic unit over time), and panel (observations for multiple units followed through time) datasets. It starts with the linear regression model and then moves to introductions of micro-econometric and macro-econometric techniques.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Understand the essential ideas and applications of econometric methods.
  2. Identify suitable econometric methods for the analysis of cross-sectional and time series data.
  3. Analyse simple datasets using econometric software such as R.
  4. Present econometric results in a readily usable form and be able to interpret and explain econometric results.
  5. Use econometric methods to provide evidence to inform policy decisions.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Quiz 1 (10) [LO 1,2,3,4]
  2. Quiz 2 (10) [LO 1,2,3,4]
  3. Group assignment 1 (10) [LO 1,2,3,4,5]
  4. Group assignment 2 (10) [LO 1,2,3,4,5]
  5. Group presentations (10) [LO 1,2,3,4,5]
  6. Final exam (3 hours) (50) [LO 1,2,3,4,5]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website.

Workload

The standard workload for a 6 unit course is 120 hours including class time and independent study.

Inherent Requirements

Not applicable.

Prescribed Texts

Verbeek, M., 2017. A Guide to Modern Econometrics, Wiley, 5th ed.

Wooldridge, J., 2019. Introductory Econometrics: A Modern Approach, South-Western, 7th ed.

Some students prefer Wooldridge’s lengthier explanations and examples while others like the Verbeek textbook for being concise, precise, and technical. The combination is recommended though it would be fine if you just want to read one textbook. The lecture notes follow the Verbeek text.

Preliminary Reading

Angrist and Pischke, 2011. Mostly Harmless Econometrics, Princeton University Press.

Assumed Knowledge

Students are expected to have initial mathematics and econometrics knowledge at the levels of IDEC7902 or equivalent and IDEC7904 or equivalent.
