In this course students will become acquainted with the fundamental concepts of syntax and morphology, and will learn about a wide variety of sentence and word structures found across the world's languages. They will develop skills in syntactic analysis, applying them to a variety of languages, including languages of Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. read and evaluate a range of literature about word and sentence structure;
  2. solve simple problems in grammatical analysis;
  3. undertake guided research in the grammatical structure of languages of different types;
  4. critically examine beliefs about language structure, diversity and linguistic equivalence; and
  5. communicate clearly and knowledgeably about language-related topics to academic and general audiences.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Analysis problems x 2, 1,500 words equivalence each (20% each for a total of 40%) (40) [LO 2,3,5]
  2. Research Report, 2,000 words (30) [LO 1,2,3,4,5]
  3. Take-home exam, 1000 words equivalence (25) [LO 2,3,4,5]
  4. Weekly quizzes assessing major points (5) [LO 2,3]

Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 36 hours of contact over 12 weeks: 12 hours of lectures, 24 hours of tutorial and tutorial-like activities; and
b) 94 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have successfully completed LING1001 or LING2020. Alternatively you may gain permission of the Course Convener to enrol in this course. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed LING6003.
