This course introduces Design Arts students to intermediate hot glass working and finishing techniques. Design-based assignments foster the acquisition of intermediate skills in glass blowing, extending to colour work, component making and cold working, with an emphasis on the execution of multiples in response to Design briefs. Integrated demonstrations, lectures and course discussions provide students with a broader understanding of hot shop based techniques and practices in the areas of craft and design. Occupational health and safety instruction is integrated throughout the syllabus.

- Competently utilise a range of intermediate glass blowing and cold working skills, in response to Design-based tasks
- Independently explore the potential of intermediate glass blowing processes in response to Design-based projects
- Investigate and demonstrate how glass blowing processes can inform designed based outcomes
- Engage and explore Design-based contexts relevant to the projects.
Indicative AssessmentPortfolio of studio work (80%) [LO 1, 2, 3]
and Journal/Documentation/Studio Theory presentation (20%) [LO 2, 4].
Feedback on work in progress is provided during class and at mid semester review session. Final assessment will be based on presented completed works, journals, tests and models.
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload4 hours per week supervised studio practice includes hands on instruction, lectures and group discussion. 6 hours per week independent studio practice includes a minimum of 1 (3 hour) self-directed hot shop session, shared with blowing partner.
