This course empowers Design Arts students to explore their own thematic, technical and conceptual interests in Glass. Guided through the development of a self-directed work proposal, students extend their Designer maker skills and knowledge through technical demonstrations, hands-on short courses and advanced tutorials.  Students articulate their developing Design methodology and locate their own work within a contemporary Design context, assisted by integrated studio theory lectures, visiting artists talks, group discussions, tutorials and critiques.  Occupational health and safety instruction is integrated throughout the syllabus.

  1. Demonstrate thorough knowledge of the processes, terminology, forms and materials for utilizing glass in a design based practice
  2. Apply skills and knowledge to the making of design based works
  3. Develop and evaluate design based concepts and processes by thinking creatively, critically and reflectively
  4. Work independently and/or collaboratively in the glass  workshop environment in response to design based project demands.
  5. Reflect on social, ethical, cultural, technological and environmental issues of design practice considering local and international perspectives.

Indicative Assessment

Portfolio of studio work (80%) [LO 1, 2, 3, 4]

and Journal/Documentation/Studio Theory presentation (20%) [LO 3, 5].

Feedback on work in progress is provided during class and at mid semester review session. Final assessment will be based on presented completed works, journals, tests and models.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

3-4 hours per week of contact include demonstrations, technical instruction, lectures, group discussions, tutorials and critiques. 6-8 hours per week independent studio practice.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be studying one of the following programs; Bachelor of Design Arts (3011) Bachelor of Design Arts (3014) Bachelor of Design Arts (3115) And you must have successfully completed (DESA2308 and DESA2309) or DESA2304 or DESA3001. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed DESA2305 or DESA3002 or ARTV2305 or ARTV3026 or ARTV3301.
