With an emphasis on academic German, this course continues with the development of listening and reading comprehension skills and with the development of oral and written communication. Students will learn and practise how to develop a critical argument in a university essay in German and how to give a class presentation with an academic content.
The course introduces students to post-war German literature and engages students in the critical study of topical issues in contemporary German-speaking societies. The latter includes a research project on Switzerland. Furthermore, it provides students with learning opportunities in the area of intercultural communication.

- Express themselves clearly and without much sign of having to restrict what they want to say.
- Use German for academic purposes, e.g. essay writing with appropriate referencing in German.
- Read and analyse longer literary texts in German and relate them to German-speaking culture.
- Understand current affairs in the German-speaking societies and analyse and critique them.
- Conduct a research project in German (This includes developing research questions, finding relevant literature about the chosen topic, and structuring and writing a longer research essay.)
- Use some generic skills, e.g. critical thinking, written and oral communication, research skills, teamwork.
Indicative Assessment
This course has continuous assessment to provide students with regular feedback on their learning progress. Proposed are:
One 2-hour in-class mid-semester test (15%) [Learning Outcomes addressed: 1, 2, 6]
One 1800-word research project (25%) [Learning Outcomes addressed: 1, 2, 4, 5, 6]
One 1500-word literary analysis (20%) [Learning Outcomes addressed: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6]
One group project (5%) [Learning Outcomes addressed: 5, 6]
One 15-minute in-class research presentation (15%) [Learning Outcomes addressed: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6]
One 2.5-hour final examination (20%) [Learning Outcomes addressed: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6]
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity.
