Management consulting is a growing and influential sector of the service industries sector. Both in government and the private sector management has come to be increasingly reliant on outside advice for a range of services from strategy through to IT infrastructure. An understanding of the management consulting industry and how consultants operate is therefore important for all public and private sector managers.

This course is delivered in interactive seminar mode and involves preparing a consultancy proposal and presenting it to a client. An assignment testing the students' knowledge and understanding of management consulting will be written following the course.

The purpose of this course is twofold:

  • to provide an understanding of the management consulting industry, the nature of management consulting and the process of consulting; and
  • to provide some insight for managers on how the management consulting industry works and how to get the best out of management consultants.

All components of the above assessment are compulsory and must be submitted.   You must obtain 50% or more as an aggregate mark to be eligible for an automatic pass grade in this course.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Students should be prepared to put in quite a few additional hours during the course outside the classroom times to prepare the written consultancy proposal, which is due on Day 4 at 10am and for their presentation to a client beginning that afternoon.
