This course gives students an opportunity to develop a critical understanding of the concept of social capital, its theoretical underpinnings and the ways in which the concept is being applied. Examples and case studies are taken from a number of countries, including Australia, Indonesia, Malawi, the Philippines, and Thailand.
Tutorials give students the opportunity to relate ideas and concepts discussed in the lectures to specific country contexts, with a focus on developing countries.
Topics covered include:
- critiques of social capital
- social capital, social exclusion and poverty
- social capital and gender
- the role of ideas in shaping social policy outcomes
- the impact of crisis on social capital, with a particular focus on the Asian financial crisis
- social capital in the development context
- social capital and community
Indicative Assessment
Essay 50%; assignments relating to readings 30%; tutorial exercise 20%The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity.
