STAT3012/STAT7029 is a course that deals with two of the most important approaches to collecting research data – surveys and experiments.
Survey sampling topics covered may include: simple random sampling, with and without replacement; estimation of population total, mean and proportion; subpopulation inference; systematic sampling; stratified sampling; ratio estimation; unequal probability sampling, including the Hansen and Hurwitz estimator and the Horvitz-Thompson estimator; regression estimation; cluster sampling; and estimation of population size.
Towards the end of the course, basic concepts of experimental design may be introduced at the expense of some of the above survey sampling topics, depending on student interests and background.

Workload
Students taking this course are expected to commit at least 10 hours a week to completing the work.

- attendance at 3 lectures per week and 1 tutorial
- 6 or more hours of private study, including time spent reviewing course materials and completing computing, tutorial work and assignments
