The 24 unit sub-thesis is a requirement of the Master of Arts (Military Studies) and is a 15,000 word piece of independent research on a subject chosen by the student and approved by the delegated authority. The sub-thesis gives students an opportunity to develop their research skills and produce a piece of written research which contributes to the body of knowledge in the field of Military Studies. Students are encouraged to seek out topics which are of central research interest to staff in the SDSC. Students wishing to leave open the possibility of further research work or doctoral study are strongly encouraged to undertake the sub-thesis and complete the MA(MS) degree. Students are assigned a supervisor at the outset of their research, who will normally be from the SDSC.

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

On satisfying the requirements of this course, students should have:

1. Developed a capacity to frame an original academic research project;

2. A sound grasp of the key scholarly works and, where applicable, policy documents relevant to their chosen research area;

3. The ability to produce a rigorous and original piece of scholarship that adheres to academic conventions, such as appropriate referencing, a clear and coherent structure, an appropriate balance between description and analysis, and a clear and original line of argument;

4. Developed a capacity to present their research findings orally in a seminar setting; and

5. The capacity to progress to doctoral-level studies.

Indicative Assessment

Research Proposal (10%), Literature Review (10%), Mid-term review paper (10%), Final Sub-thesis (70%)

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

Students undertaking this course could expect a workload of 20 hours per week.  This is inclusive of actual contact hours for lectures and also out of class preparation time.
