Although armed force remains an important factor in international affairs, hostilities usually only commence after a period of heightened tension and negotiation. Such crises form the critical junctures of history. This course will explore the causes, dynamics and resolution of international crises through a series of case studies. In doing so, the course will examine the roles of intelligence, media, domestic politics and leadership in managing crises. Particular attention will be given to the processes of collective and individual decision making. A selection of case studies will be examined including the 1914 mobilisation crisis, the Suez Crisis, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the 1995-6 Taiwan Strait crisis, and East Timor in 1999.
