Professional Practices is presented under the auspices of the Art Theory Workshop. It may be taken as a Complementary Studies course, or as an Art Theory course at third-year level. It aims to provide a basic understanding of the economic and legal framework of the art world; to provide an understanding of the skills necessary for an artist to practise professionally; to introduce resources available to artists to assist their economic survival in the production of art. It is a crucial nuts and bolts unit.
An Advanced Course (i.e. a second course of Professional Practices) or work placements may also be available and must be negotiated by the student with the Head of Art Theory and the Major Workshop.

- Compare and critically analyse venue exhibition presentation
- Reflect on and discuss your own learning as it relates to the subject matter of the course.
- Use knowledge of the cultural sector in Australia to develop an appropriately targeted package of professional promotional material.
- Prepare and present a professional artist¹s portfolio including written material and visual representation.
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the moral, legal and professional framework of the Art and Craft sector.
Indicative Assessment
Written essay (65%), oral presentation (25%), attendance and participation (10%); or equivalent.
Attendance at lectures and tutorials is compulsory.
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students.
