The course will introduce students to the history and develpment of the various styles of Chinese calligraphy over the course of more than two millennia. Students will be tutored in rudimentory aspects of the craft.

After successful completion of the course, students should be able to :- Understand key phases of the development of Chinese calligraphy;
- Understand the role of Chinese calligraphy historically;
- Integrate this theoretical and historical knowledge with empirical examples;
- Think critically;
- Synthesising and contextualising new information;
- Locate, analyse, evaluate and synthesise information from a wide variety of sources, both Western and Chinese;
- Work in cooperative groups on key issues to do with this field of Chinese Studies
- Communicate findings to others.

Essay of 2000 words (20%)
Final calligraphic production (40%).
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity.
