Semester in Asia is designed for students who wish to undertake a semester of language study at a partner university in Asia. It entails a comprehensive immersion in a specific country where your language of study is spoken and you will gain academic credit towards your ANU degree.
Semester in Asia participants benefit from rapid advancement in their language ability and gain valuable insights into local cultures. In addition to the academic benefit from studying in-country, students build strong networks and have valuable opportunities to travel throughout the Asia Pacific region.
Semester in Asia is available via a competitive application process to students who have an intermediate language ability at the time of application.

Admission to Semester in Asia is based on a competitive application process. Where places are limited, students will be selected on academic merit and responses to selection criteria.Intermediate language ability is defined as the successful completion of the following ANU courses (or approved equivalent courses):
Chinese: CHIN3020 Modern Chinese 3 and CHIN3021 Modern Chinese 4
Indonesian: INDN2002 Indonesian 2A and INDN2003 Indonesian 2B
Japanese: JPNS2012 Spoken Japanese 3 and JPNS2013 Spoken Japanese 4
Korean: KORE2521 Modern Korean 3 and KORE2522 Modern Korean 4
Thai: THAI2002 Thai 2A and THAI2003 Thai 2B
Vietnamese: VIET2002 Vietnamese 2A and VIET2003 Vietnamese 2B
Indicative Assessment
Assessment requirements vary from host institution to host institution. Assessment will be undertaken in the relevant language and may include exams, presentations, essays, reports and class participation.
Students must undertake a full time study load at the host institution and successfully complete all courses to receive 24 units of credit for Semester in Asia.
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload
The equivalent of a full time study load at the host institution for one semester.
Assumed Knowledge
To be eligible for Semester in Asia students must have:1) Already completed at least eight courses (48 units) of study towards their ANU degree by the end of the semester in which they submit their application
2) An ANU GPA of 5.0 or above
3) An intermediate language ability by the end of the semester in which they submit their application (see below for intermediate language definitions)
4) Space in their relevant language major to accommodate the 24 units of credit for Semester in Asia
5) At least one course (6 units) of study remaining in their ANU degree after completion of the 24 unit Semester in Asia course

Students continuing in their current program of study will have their tuition fees indexed annually from the year in which you commenced your program.
