This course examines some of the central issues in teaching Asian content to Australian school students. Students will gain expertise in locating and using resources for teaching Asian content; finding and analysing key themes of Asian society and culture; developing strategies and frameworks for expanding the teaching of Asian studies in schools. 

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

On successful completion of the course, students will have moved towards gaining greater 'Asia literacy'.

They should be able to:
1. identify the fundamental issues and themes shaping contemporary Asian societies that are of relevance to their roles as teachers;
2. discuss how these issues and themes are relevant to Australian schoolchildren;
3. assess arguments made in the field;
4. understand academic research practice;
5. analyse and compare relevant data;
6. collaborate with other students and staff to select and combine materials for a study guide;
7. research, present and justify the results of their collaboration with other students and staff with respect to the study guides;
8. reflect on and articulate how their own views on the area have developed over the course of the semester

Indicative Assessment

This course will be assessed through online assessments and intensive seminars. Assessment for this course is mostly built around teachers preparing a study guide for teaching Asian content in their classroom.

1. Proposal for study guide  (20%). Students should identify the fundamental issues and themes shaping contemporary Asian societies that are of relevance to their roles as teachers (1);

2. Critical bibliography and photo essay (30%) Should assess arguments made in the field (3) and understand academic research practice (4).
3. Participation in Seminar (10%) will enable students to collaborate with other students and staff to select and combine materials for a study guide.(6)

4. Final project (40%). Should discuss how these issues and themes are relevant to Australian schoolchildren (1); Students should analyse and compare relevant data on Asian studies (2) (3). Allows students to research, present and justify the results of their collaboration with other students and staff, and reflect on and articulate how their own views on the area have developed over the course of the semester. The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

Students will undertake a total of 36 hours of blended learning workload for this course. This will incorporate intensive teaching, online group discussion and tasks and peer review presentations.
