This course examines international migration from both theoretical and empirical perspectives to provide students with an understanding of the factors behind current trends in international population movements and their impacts on the migrants themselves and the countries of origin and destination.
Specific topics examined each year include gender and migration, the concept of 'replacement migration', the effectiveness of temporary migrant worker programs and the Global Commission on International Migration report. Case studies focussing on Australia, the US, Europe and the Asian region allow for a comparison of the different types of movements and associated policy response.
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
Students complete the readings each week for discussion in class. The course is taught intensively as a graduate research seminar over an eight-week period. Students then have four weeks to write a research essay during which time the course convenor will be available for consultation. Students completing the course should be able to:
Discuss the theories from various disciplinary perspectives in relation to the factors motivating and sustaining international migration flows;
Demonstrate an understanding of the issues related to current trends and patterns in international population movements in different countries and regions;
Discuss the policy implications of international migration trends and patterns and critique policy recommendations based on the theoretical and empirical perspectives on international migration examined in the course.
Research and write a paper on a topic or issue related to international migration based on analysis of empirical data or library research.
Assessment will be based on seminar participation (10% of total grade), a short written assignment (1500 words, 25% of total grade) and a research essay on a topic of your choice (4000-6000 words, 65% of total grade).
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Requisite and Incompatibility
There is no prescribed text. Reading will be mainly research papers from international migration journals. Copies will be handed out in class or are available online and can be downloaded from the relevant websites.
