Design students will design and implement an individual response to a project that they will write a brief for.   The design project through critical and reflective discussion on social, ethical, cultural, technological and environmental issues an individual design project will evolve. The student will articulate a contextual design framework for their design practice, and become responsible for the management of their individual project.  Including designing, making, firing and finishing within a shared studio. Occupational health and safety instruction is an integral part of this course.

  1. Research, plan and execute a Ceramic design-based project
  2. Demonstrate a high level of skill in the application of new technologies and practical design processes relevant to the ceramic medium.
  3. Effectively interpret, communicate and present ideas suited to the design project through integration of concepts and processes
  4. Demonstrate expanded awareness of historical and theoretical contexts of design practice with reference to the ceramic medium.
  5. Consider their own design work in relation to broader cultural contexts
  6. Show familiarity with research methodologies relating to design.

Indicative Assessment

Portfolio of studio work (80%) [LOs 1 – 5]

Journal/Documentation (20%) [LOs 2, 4, 5]

Assessment will be based on the Rubric for this course Assessment includes periodic critique and review sessions that provide ongoing feedback on work in progress.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

4 hours per week lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice and 6 hours per week independent studio practice.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be studying one of the following programs; Bachelor of Design Arts (3011) Bachelor of Design Arts (3014) Bachelor of Design Arts (3115) To enrol in this course you must have successfully completed DESA 2108 and DESA2109; or DESA2104; or DESA3001. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed ARTV2105 or ARTV3026 or ARTV3103 or DESA2105 or DESA3002.
